Asleep at the Wheel was established in 1970 in Paw Paw, West Virginia, and is now based in Austin. They have released more than 20 albums, won nine Grammys, appeared in numerous movies, toured throughout Europe and America, and put an impressive number of singles on the charts.
Asleep at the Wheel is the brainchild of Ray Benson and Reuben Gosfield (professional name Lucky Oceans), who found themselves in Washington, D.C., opening for Hot Tuna and Alice Cooper soon after they established the band. The relocated to East Oakland, California and released “Comin’ Right at Ya,” their debut album, in 1973 on the United Artists label.
Their second album, “Asleep at the Wheel,” dropped in 1974. It contained a cover of “Choo Choo Ch’Boogie,” by Louis Jordan, and the single made it onto the country charts. The following year, their album “Texas Gold” contained the country Top Ten single “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read.” Rolling Stone voted them “Best Country Western Band” in 1977.
Asleep at the Wheel” have garnered 27 Grammy nominations and won the award eight times. A review says:
