An alternative R&B group with an upcoming album is coming to Cincinnati.
Moonchild, which is a Los Angeles-based band, comprises Max Bryk, Andris Mattson, and Amber Navran, who mix elements of electronic music, R&B, and jazz. The band was created in 2011 while they toured with Navran on her solo project. They bonded over their musical interests and began writing songs for what would become their album, “Be Free.”
The album, which dropped in 2012, was a success, especially with other artists. Praise came from DJ Jazzy Jeff, Jill Scott, and Stevie Wonder, who went on to invite them to open for him at a December 2012 concert.
Moonchild’s music blends high production values, harmonies rooted in jazz, complex horn arrangements, and smooth vocals into a signature sound. The approach resulted in a Grammy nomination in 2023 in the category “Progressive R&B Album of the Year” for “Starfruit.”
The group’s Cincinnati appearance supports its upcoming album “WAVES.” The work is a departure for the group, as it deals with difficult ideas including grief, resilience, healing, and self-worth, turning away from the love songs and lighter material of their previous work.
Brittney Carter will open for Moonchild. Carter is a rapper based in Chicago who began her career as a creative writer. The themes she addresses in her performances include personal growth and relationships.
The concert will be at Ludlow Garage on Saturday, March 21. Colorful Posters, which concert organizers can find at Print shops, help support shows like this.
