Fans of barbecue came from throughout the Cincinnati area last Saturday to celebrate their favorite food.
A competition called the ‘River Grill before the Big Chill’ was held on the riverfront for the second year in a row, and attendees enjoyed food and fun.
One of the participants, Bubba Grills’ Lonnie Smith, said that the Kansas City Barbecue Society, which is the biggest sanctioned barbecue organization in the country, is bringing in contest judges from throughout the nation. Smith is the competition’s defending champion.
Smith revealed that he has been barbecuing professionally since 2005, and has taken part in well over 100 competitions. However, he said there is something special about competing along the Ohio River in Cincinnati. He added that nobody works harder than the city’s parks group to hold a world class event like this one.
The River Grill is held to raise money to support the parks located on the riverfront, and is expected to raise over $100,000. According to Jessica Young, who is with the Cincinnati Parks Board, the competition is also a way to get people to come out for one of the last warm weekends of the year, visit their parks, and appreciate their beauty.
