Cincinnati residents have been excited by a sign on the door of the now-closed Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, saying a new cinema will be taking over the space soon.
Theater lovers will be glad to know that the Cincinnati Shakespeare did not close—it now has a new space of its own in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. Some details have finally emerged, and it appears movie lovers will indeed have a new venue to enjoy their favorite form of entertainment.
The effort is the brainchild of Tim Swallow, who, in addition to running the Cincinnati World Cinema, has shown documentaries, foreign films, Oscar shorts, and indie films at various venues throughout the city, including the Cincinnati Art Museum and Memorial Hall. Swallow recently confirmed that he has signed the lease on the downtown space, which he intends to use as a permanent location housing a cinema and film center. He does not have an opening date yet.
The space is in the Garfield Tower Apartments on Race Street, and has been an entertainment space for years. In the 1980s, it housed The Movies, a repertory movie theater. Earlier, it was called The Place, a boutique-style cinema that dates back to the time in the 1960s and 1970s when smaller theaters were found in urban areas, where they offered alternatives to the larger, so-called movie ‘palaces’.
