The fifth ship to bear the name “Cincinnati” will be commissioned later this year.
According to an article on the city's website, the U.S. Navy has named a date for the commissioning of the USS Cincinnati, designated Littoral Combat Ship 29 (LCS20).
The new vessel is the fifth ship in the history of the Navy to bear the name of the city. The first was in service during the Civil War; the second was used to enforce neutrality during the 1895 Cuban Revolution, and then went on to serve in the Spanish-American War that followed a few years later. The third ship served during the Second World War, and the fourth during the Cold War.
John Cranley, Cincinnati's mayor, said he was honored to hold the office at a time when another USS Cincinnati is about to take to the seas. Littoral combat ships are smaller vessels designed for use in the littorals, generally considered to be areas of shallower water near the shore. Cincinnati Councilmember David Mann, who is a veteran of the Navy, attended a mast-stepping ceremony in October 2018, which officially christened the ship. The ship also has a Key to the City welded into its infrastructure.
The ship will be commissioned this October in Gulfport, Mississippi, and home ported in San Diego. Banner printing is often used to create decorations for occasions like this.
