Ice cream store to expand Fountain Square space
Graeter’s Ice Cream, a Cincinnati favorite, announced plans to expand its Fountain Square store, one of several renovations taking place at the headquarters of Fifth Third Bank, which has two buildings on the square.
According to Chip Graeter, the company will be adding more seating, additional storage space, a larger walk-in freezer, an extra bathroom, and larger space to improve customer flow. The present plan is for the location to shut down after Labor Day, but open again in time for Thanksgiving. Managers can use banner printing to create decorations for a reopening celebration on occasions like this.
Graeter said it is gaining the extra space by taking over the spot formerly occupied by Servatii, located in the First Third’s tower. Servatii, a pastry shop, has been closed since December. He added the most important things to be accomplished by the expansion are to improve line flow, give them more storage, and take care of their customers more efficiently.
Graeter’s has been in business since 1868, when Louis Graeter began selling his ice cream on Cincinnati streets. Today, the company is still family-owned and operated, and still makes its ice cream using the French pot process. This method produces ice cream in two-gallon batches – the industry’s smallest.
The company announced its plans about two weeks after First Third said it was planning a major renovation of its Fountain Square headquarters.
