Dancers step up in Cincinnati
A group of step dancers will present a lively performance soon in Cincinnati.
Step Africa! is a dance troupe founded by C. Brian Williams in 1994. The group has become the world’s foremost authority on stepping, a percussive form of dance. Under the leadership of Mr. Williams, stepping has become an important American cultural export, as the troupe has toured over 60 countries, as well as consistently being ranked in the Top 10 African American dance companies in the nation.
Stepping is often done by sororities and fraternities at Black universities and colleges. Step Africa! combines that style with contemporary dances and traditional dances from Africa into something entirely new. Performances are more than simple dance shows; they include humor, storytelling, songs, and audience participation.
Step Africa! tours 50 cities across the country each year, performing in theaters and colleges, as well as undertaking global tours.
Step Africa! has won several awards and has been inducted into the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Hall of Fame, the first time a dance company has won this honor. Stepping has even made it into the world of opera, when choreographer Camille A. Brown designed a step dance for the opera “Fire Shut Up in My Bones” by Terrance Blanchard, which opened the 2021 season at the Metropolitan Opera.
Step Afrika! will be at the Aronoff Center for the Arts on March 11. When they plan events like this, organizers may use brochure printing to create programs for the show.
