Choral group to perform in Cincinnati in December

A group that celebrates the beauty of the human voice is planning to perform in Cincinnati.

The a cappella group Straight No Chaser formed in 1996 in Bloomington, Indiana, at Indiana University. The 10 founding members, all of whom are students, remained together from 1996 until 1999, and when they graduated, other students were chosen to replace them. The group continues as a collegiate endeavor.

The original group took its name from the title track of “Straight, No Chaser,” the 1967 album by jazz great Thelonious Monk. The group performed at major Chicago attractions such as Navy Pier, the original Comiskey Park (now demolished), and Wrigley Field. It opened for stars like Lou Rawls and toured nationally, appearing in such storied venues as Carnegie Hall.

The group reunited in 2006, existing alongside the college group, both known as Straight No Chaser. In 2012, to avoid confusion, the college group renamed itself and is now known as Another Round, continuing the alcohol theme established with the “Straight No Chaser” label.

The original group still performs and has released 10 studio albums, including four with holiday themes, as well as seven EPs and 14 other projects. A performance review says:

“As always, SNC was terrific. The blend of voices is hard to beat, and the close harmonies are tricky and well executed.”

Straight No Chaser will appear at the Taft Theatre on Wednesday, December 10. Appearances like this benefit when organizers use poster printing to create exciting advertising for them.
