The Beach Boys are an iconic group that formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. The Wilson brothers - Carl, Dennis, and Brian - were the founders, along with a friend of theirs, Al Jardine, and Mike Love, their cousin. The group is recognized as being one of the most influential and popular acts in rock, known for their close harmonies, ingenuity, and lyrics that celebrated a specific culture, that of Southern California. Songs about romance, cars, and surfing were found in their catalog, which includes hits like “Little Deuce Coupe,” “Surfin’ Safari,” “California Girls,” and the iconic “Good Vibrations.”
The band created their sound by incorporating elements from pop vocal groups that preceded rock bands, black R&B, and rock and roll from the 1950s. With Brian Wilson leading, they sometimes included jazz or classic elements or used unusual recording techniques to create their sound. They were successful almost from the beginning, putting “Surfin’ U.S.A.” in the Top Ten in 1963, the first in their long, successful run of hit recordings.
