Wanda Sykes was born in Virginia, raised in Maryland, graduated from Hampton University, and obtained her first job at the National Security Agency, where she worked as a contracting specialist for five years.
She also began performing on weekends and at night, and doing stand-up in local clubs until she relocated to New York City in 1992. She began landing small roles on television, appearing on the “Def Comedy Jam” in the 1990s.
In 1999, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for her work as a writer on “The Chris Rock Show.” “Entertainment Weekly” called her one of the “25 Funniest People in America” in 2004, and she had recurring roles on “The New Adventures of Old Christine,” from 2006 to 2010, and “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” from 2001 to 2011. She was nominated for Primetime Emmy Awards for her work on “Black-ish,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
Sykes has film appearances to her credit as well, including “Monster-in-Law,” and “Evan Almighty.” In addition to these roles, she has contributed voiceover work in several films, including “Brother Bear 2” and the “Ice Age” franchise.
A review says:
“Wanda does not disappoint. Her side-splitting humor is on point. From current events to life situations Wanda brings out the comical side of it all.”
Wanda Sykes will be at the Andrew J. Brady Music Center on Friday, February 13. Organizers of events like this can use poster printing to help promote them.
