Multi-award-winning jazz musician coming to Cincinnati

A winner of six Billboard awards, an Emmy, ten Grammys, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom will bring his talent to Cincinnati.

Arturo Sandoval was born near Havana, Cuba, and began studying music when he was 12. In 1964, he began studying at the Cuban National School of Arts, taking lessons in classical trumpet for three years before turning to jazz. He was voted Cuba’s Best Instrumentalist in 1982, 1983, and 1984.

In 1977, he had met the legendary Dizzy Gillespie, who brought Latin influences into jazz, and became his protégé. Gillespie invited Sandoval to join the United Nations Orchestra in 1989, and later helped him defect to the United States where he became a citizen in 1998.

Sandoval has taught at Florida International University, and at Whitworth University, where he heads its jazz ensemble. In 1996, the Kennedy Center Ballet commissioned Sandoval to write the score for “Pepito’s Story.” Sandoval has also composed a classical trumpet concerto, performing and recording it with the London Symphony Orchestra.

A review of Sandoval in concert says:

“Master showman and musician Arturo Sandoval crafted a highly entertaining evening. A nearly full house . . . went home musically sated — with the added bonus of having had a few good laughs.”

Sandoval will be at the Ludlow Garage on October 10. Organizers of events like this often turn to printers to use poster printing to create advertising.
