Band with a message visits Cincinnati

A rock group whose work uses music to examine life is coming to Cincinnati.

American Aquarium was formed in Raleigh, North Carolina by guitarist and lead vocalist BJ Barham, who is still the group’s frontman. The lineup has changed over the years, with new members coming from other groups.

The band is an alternative-country group and has become known for material that has audiences analyzing the lyrics deeply. According to Barham, the idea of music that tackles important issues is why the band started performing.

American Aquarium has had a prolific recording career. They dropped their debut album, “Antique Hearts” in 2006, then released four more albums until 2012, when they released both “Live in Raleigh” and “Burn. Flicker. Die.” The latter became their most successful album to that time, causing the 2013 Lone Star Music Awards to nominate it for “Best Americana/Roots Album” and “Best Album Artwork.”

Their latest album is 2024’s “The Fear of Standing Still,” which features Barham’s incisive songwriting, using straight-ahead rock to tackle themes such as reproductive rights, generational trauma, and Southern identity. A concert review says:

“American Aquarium brought the house down as they wrapped up The Fear of Standing Still Tour with an unforgettable final show—right where it all began, in North Carolina.”

American Aquarium will be at the Ludlow Garage on Sunday, July 5. To publicize the show, organizers can count on poster printing to create advertisements.
