Walk for life in Centerville

An upcoming event in Centerville is a world-wide celebration of survival and support.

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life, which was inaugurated in 1985, is the society’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and it takes place in communities around the world. The Relay is walked by cancer survivors, their friends and families, and honors those who have been lost to the disease.

There are four signature elements to the event. The first is a celebration of the community’s cancer survivors. Everyone is encouraged to invite family members and friends to invite survivors to attend the event, where they will be cheered as they walk their lap of the course. People are encouraged to line up to cheer and to bring pom-poms, noisemakers, and anything that can be used to celebrate.

The second element is a lap for caregivers, who will walk with those they aided. Anyone who took care of someone with the disease, whether or not they are still living, is welcome to join in.

The third element is the lighting of the luminaria—bags of sand with candles inside. These are beautiful tributes to those who have been lost.

The final element is an opportunity to fight back by donating. The Relay for Life is scheduled for May 10, from 5.00 pm until 11.00 pm, at Centerville High School. Survivor check-in will open at 4.30 pm. When they plan events like this, organizers often work with banner printing to create course markers.
