The Smithtown-area parks added were Northwest Creek Park, Edward V. Ecker Sr. County Park and Inlet Pond County Park and acreage expanded in Hubbard County Park and Buckskill County Park for additional archery hunting.
A growing deer population and the resulting concerns over public safety and the environment has prompted the county to add to its archery hunting programs.
A spokesperson for Steve Bellone, a Suffolk County Executive, issued the following statement printed by Newsday on the subject of the deer boom:
“The county added acreage because of the growth of the deer population as it relates to public safety concerns such as vehicle-deer collisions, and ecological damage.”
Suffolk County residents will have access to deer hunting via the program during the NYSDEC Long Island Archery Hunting 2017-18 Season. Beyond the participation requirements laid down by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), the Department of Parks has its own requirements that apply as well.
Informational Brochures and other printed materials are often used to get information like this across to the public, but more information concerning the program is available via the Suffolk County website. The season continues through January 31, 2018.
