Students from Smithtown High School West helped Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk at a home building site this month.
Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit organization that helps to provide decent, affordable housing for low-income residents in their chapter communities all around the world.
The Suffolk chapter was formed in 1987, and runs a Student Build program every year in which students fundraise, learn about the need for affordable housing in their communities, and try their hands at building. Construction experience and supervision are supplied by the Habitat crew, as are the tools, materials, and protective equipment required on site.
Each year, over 1,000 students from nearly 40 schools participate in the Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk Student Build program, raising over $50,000 for the charity. Distributing Flyers and printing Posters for display can help to inform the public and attract attention to fundraising activities.
Students form Habitat for Humanity clubs within their individual schools, and each club appoints an advisor to liaise with the local Habitat office. In return for raising money and supplying manpower, students receive community service hours, education on the operation of nonprofit organizations, and an opportunity to learn hands-on construction skills while making a difference for members of their home communities.
