Student athletes from Smithtown’s High School West are continuing to do what they can to improve the lives of the less fortunate in their community.
The kids, who are members of the Athletes Helping Athletes club, decided to collect nonperishable food items for those in need by asking for anyone who came to their recent fourth annual dodge ball tournament to bring along a donation as their entrance fee to the event . Through this effort, they were able to gather some 250lb of food, which they presented to WALK-FM to help them in their yearly food drive.
The donated items will be delivered to the Long Island Cares food bank, which will be able to distribute to those who need a helping hand through the holiday period.
According to Long Island Cares, local food drives such as this are a major source of inventory for them throughout the year. Its website notes that these play a large role in helping it be able to feed as many people as it does. In part, through the generosity of the public each year, the organization is able to distribute more than eight millions pounds of food. Poster printing companies can produce promotional materials that help to spread the word about just how important this is to the community.
Any person, business or organization who would like to organize their own food drive for Long Island Cares is invited to visit its website, where information, tips, and more have been made available.
