Sarah Adamo, a senior at Smithtown High School West, is one of the five winners of the 2017 Rising Scientist Award.
The award is presented yearly by the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center and the Child Mind Institute to New York metro area high school students who demonstrate outstanding aptitude in science or neuroscience. Students are nominated in the spring of their junior year by their teachers
For those who are chosen, the award will make a welcome addition to their college applications. Moreover, when it comes time to send out resumés it will almost certainly be included in the text sent to the printing companies.
The online local news site Smithtown Matters quoted Child Mind Institute’s President Dr. Harold S. Koplewicz as saying:
“This is a particularly exciting year as we recognize a group of all female Rising Scientists. Their commitment, drive, and vision for the future of mental health and neuroscience, especially at such a young age, is inspiring.”
As a result of the honor, the Smithtown Central School District Board of Education recognized Adamo for this and her other accomplishments at their September 26 meeting. Additionally, she will attend a breakfast to honor the award recipients at the CUNY Advanced Science Research Center, and will be given a scholarship in the amount of $2,000 for college expenses.
