The annual Spring Family Fishing Festival will be held in Belmont Lake State Park. There will be multiple events designed for the whole family.
This event is coordinated by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). One of the purposes of the festival is to highlight the trout stocking program, which is run by DEC. Usually in March and April, DEC stocks nearby lakes and rivers with a variety of trout, including brown, brook, and rainbow.
The festival is a Free Fishing Event, so participants do not have to have a fishing license. Normally, anyone 16 or older would need the license in order to fish legally. The festival is a way for beginners to test out fishing; part of the event will be the free demonstrations of fly casting, and fishing instruction. There will also be fish cleaning services available during the event. There will be loaner rods available for those who need them, however it is expected that the loaners will go fast. Free bait will be available for all during the event.
The Belmont Lake State Park is not far from Smithtown – about a 20-minute drive depending on traffic. There will be an $8 parking charge during the event. Those with an Empire Pass can park for free.
