According to Niche.com, Smithtown is among the best school districts in the state.
The K-12 school ranking and review website ranked schools using a methodology that combined statistics and opinions from 300,000 students and parents. Smithtown is number 81 on Niche's list.
Niche ranked the following districts as the top five in the state: Jericho School District, Rye City School District, Chappaqua Central School District, Great Neck School District, and Scarsdale School District.
Four Long Island districts also made Niche's national list of the top 100 school districts: Jericho (number 3), Great Neck (number 28), Syosset (number 82), and Port Washington (number 100).
In Niche's one-page report describing its 2016 methodology, the website explains that each ranking considers:
"…Key factors such as "the strength of academics, quality of teachers, school resources, the quality of student life, as well as student and parent reviews, in an attempt to measure the overall excellence of the district."
Of these factors, academic grade counted for 50% of the ranking—more than any other factor. Extracurricular and sports grades counted the least, at 2.5% each.
Niche's database contains 12,153 U.S. school districts. Any school district with a profile that lacked sufficient data for Niche's purposes was excluded. That meant that 10,563 school districts were actually considered, of which 10,488 received a ranking. The rest remain unranked.
Smithtown and other ranked school districts may wish to publicly announce this achievement by displaying Banners, adding the achievement to school Brochures, ordering promotional Pens, and putting in orders for poster printing.
