Next month, Smithtown police officers will have the opportunity to learn proper legal procedures by attending the New York Case Law That All Cops Need to Know class.
The course will be taught by instructor Ken Rice, a New York City sergeant and admitted attorney. Drawing from his extensive experience in both the legal and police field, Rice has taught legal classes to law enforcement officers on both a state and federal level.
The class will delve into legal considerations that surround New York case law and equip students with the necessary knowledge to make the right and lawful decisions while in the field. The material presented covers how to properly execute car stops, how to perform warrantless home searches according to legal guidelines, and when to utilize K-9 units. Proper identification procedures and New York’s Right to Counsel rules will be discussed. Students will also be exposed to trial preparation tips and courtroom testimony procedures.
Training workshops like this often rely on printed materials to guide students along during instruction, so organizers may seek out businesses specializing in areas such as brochure printing.
The class is scheduled for one month from today, on January 31, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. It will take place at Smithtown Landing Country Club on 495 Landing Avenue. Class registration is $175.
