Locals scare up some fun

Residents in and around Smithtown can partake in some fall fun.

The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is hosting the 25th Annual Scarecrow Competition at the Stony Brook Village Center. A banner printing service was probably asked to make large Signs for this event.

Participants can enter the Category A competition for previous winners and professionals, Category B for adults and families, and Category C for children aged 12 and under. Each category will have several cash prizes, between $50 and $250, for the winners.

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, scarecrows decorated in mostly pink will be given 50 extra points for the contest.

October 2 is the deadline for the registration, which costs $15. Then, from October 2 until October 4, participants can set up their scarecrows at their assigned location. Judging will take place from October 5 until October 28 and the winners will be announced on October 29.

On October 31 from 2:00 pm until 5:00 pm, there will be a Halloween Festival, and at 3:00 pm, the scarecrow winners will be celebrated. During this event, kids can also go trick-or-treating, play games, and take part in a costume parade. While supplies last, free mini pumpkins will be given out too.

The Stony Brook Village Center is located on 111 Main Street in Stony Brook. For more information, call 631-751-2244.
