Teens in Stony Brook, and nearby Smithtown, can unleash their inner scientist later this month.
The Ward Melville Heritage Organization is hosting ‘Salt Marsh Scientists’, a program for kids between the ages of 13 and 17. Programs will have between 10 and 15 members.
During the program, kids will be able to explore the wetland preserve at West Meadow Creek. During this time, they can learn to identify birds, crabs, shells, and other native species. In addition, participants will learn more about concepts such as zonation, foodwebs, salt marshes, and biodiversity.
Under the supervision of qualified instructors, budding scientists will take part in scientific field work such as observation, lab work, and conservation. It is likely the organization used brochure printers to make a colorful trifold handout that provides information about the Salt Marsh Scientists program and the wetland.
Registration costs $240 per child, and sibling discounts are also available. Space is limited and it is important to fill out an application and register as soon as possible. To get a refund, individuals must cancel two weeks before the event.
The program will take place from July 20 through July 24 from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm.
The event will be held in the Ernst Marine Conservation Center, an 88-acre wetland with a classroom, a lab, microscopes and more. The center is located on 111 Main Street in Stony Brook. For more information, call 631-751-2244.
