The days of dialing only seven digits to make a local phone call in Suffolk County are numbered – literally. Soon, it will be necessary to dial an area code before entering the suffix and individual number to reach a party.
Residents in Smithtown and throughout Suffolk County will, beginning June 18, have to change their phone calling habits. As of that date, callers will have to include the 631 area code when dialing. The change is due to the lack of available numbers remaining in the current exchange, and the solution is to begin issuing numbers with a new area code – 934.
Due to the influence of local business groups, no current numbers will have their area codes changed to 934. However, any preprogrammed numbers in phones have to be updated to include those extra three numbers, meaning some businesses and organizations may need to make changes to their custom Business Cards and other business Stationery.
All Island Security spokesperson Duane Pescale reminds residents to contact their local alarm company and ensure that the company is equipped to deal with a 10-digit phone number. Panels that are not programmed with 10-digit calling will be unable to receive notice of a tripped alarm.
The new 934 area codes will begin being issued to new customers in July.
