Port Washington festival goes Greek

Residents in the Port Washington area are gearing up for the Greek Festival on the Harbor. The oceanside event brings together amusements, dancing, music, and food for an all-around celebration of Greek culture and heritage.

The weekend-long event features a robust menu of specialties from the Aegean, including galaktoboureko (a traditional Greek dessert of custard in pastry) and gyros (a cooked meat dish). Additionally, the Ioakimedes Market is being billed on the Flyers as an authentic Greek style marketplace, with vendors offering not only traditional Greek goods and food, but also a flea market section where locals can sell their wares.

Aside from the shopping, live music will also be played for the weekend, offering a number of traditional Greek ballads and even a few dance lessons for those interested in learning some folk steps. Amusement park rides and carnival style games will line the harbor also, for those looking for a more traditional festival. On Saturday, the evening will be capped off with a display of fireworks..

The Greek Festival on the Harbor will be held this weekend, on September 23, 24, and 25, at the North Hempstead Beach Park. Admission and parking for the event are free, though visitors must pay for food, rides, and games. Anyone interested in more information should get in touch with the Archangel Michael Church.
