Special needs school in Henrietta receives funds to relocate

An amount of $75m has been committed to create a facility that will be the first of its kind in Henrietta.

The funds will bring together the Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Institute at the University of Rochester and the Mary Cariola Center School on one campus. News of such developments is often spread throughout a community with flyer printing.

The Mary Cariola Center school serves about 450 special needs students from 55 school districts in the Rochester region. Both the school and the University of Rochester are evaluating available space in the mall. The interior of the mall closed at the end of last year, although businesses with entrances on the exterior were able to remain open.

Tom Golisano, a local philanthropist, said that bringing these two establishments together on one campus will create an environment where family services, clinical care, research, and education can work together. He added that it is this type of collaboration that can really help those individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Executive director of the Golisano Foundation, Eric Dayton, stressed that these students are just as deserving of educational opportunities as any others.

An application for a variance of use of the space needs to be submitted, with the move to the Marketplace Mall most likely to be finalized in the fall.
