The town of Henrietta is looking to create a community center in the Dome Arena by converting Minett Hall, situated next to it, into a youth sports facility.
Stephen Schultz, town supervisor, is applying for two grants from New York State to cover the cost of purchasing the Dome property and its acreage outdoors. The first is a grant of $6m from Recreational Infrastructure for Communities, Kids and Seniors. The second falls somewhere from $1m to $2m and comes from the Pro-Housing Supply Fund.
Schultz said the Dome building has large meeting rooms that could be used by groups in the community. He added that multiple needs, such as community events and emergency situations, could be filled by its main meeting space. Spanning 25,000 square feet, he noted that the space could also be rented for events.
Minett Hall would become the location for the youth gymnastics program in town. The hall spans 23,000 square feet and could accommodate the gymnastics program, as well as pickleball and youth hockey.
The town will look to partner with a developer on the outdoor space to build an affordable housing project. Schultz said there is a waiting list of two to three years for all the affordable senior housing communities in Henrietta, so this development should ease this.
News of such potential projects could be disseminated throughout a community with flyer printing.
