Faculty, parents, and alumni are working together to organize the event. Dana McCann, the academy's principal, told the Forest Hills Times that they "wanted to do something special,” adding:
“We want to show all of the wonderful things our graduates have gone on to achieve, as well as highlight how special our school community is.”
McCann has only been principal at the school for one year, but has spent much of the time learning about people connected to the school before, and about the history of the institution.
The gala event will not just be a celebration; organizers are looking at it as an opportunity to raise more funding for the school. They hope to raise $50,000, which would go towards improving the gymnasium and schoolyard – spaces that are used by the larger community.
Organizations planning major milestone events often use local printing companies to create Invitations. About 200 people are expected to attend the school's anniversary celebration, with some former students traveling up to New York from Florida.
Alumni who are interested in helping out are encouraged to email alums@olmercyca.com for more information. The gala is scheduled for October 21 at the West Side Tennis Club.
