Kinns Road Park in Clifton Park is a popular destination for joggers, hikers, and dog walkers, but Saratoga County wants to cut down hundreds of trees to improve the health of the forest by thinning it out.
Jason Kemper, who is the county's planning director, says that removing sick and dead trees near the trails will allow the understory to grow, and keep the trails safe by removing the danger of trees falling on park visitors.
Kemper believes the thinning efforts will take about two months. The work is planned to take place in the late winter and early spring, at which time all public access to the park will be blocked.
Phil Barrett, who is Clifton Park's town supervisor, has heard from people who are concerned about the proposal to thin the forest. He says that there is no doubt there are dead tress that must be removed, but goes on to say that the park is a jewel of the community, and he and others are concerned that the operation could have a negative impact on the park's recreational features. He hopes Clifton Park and the county will have further discussions before finalizing the plan to cut down trees.
City officials could work with a postcard printing company to create a Mailing card for residents describing the necessity for the work.
