A parking shortage in downtown Saratoga Springs has made it difficult for visitors to explore the Broadway shopping district, but the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce has accepted the request for a new City Center garage.
The proposal has the green light under the condition that the consultant hired will prioritize parking management duties over raising revenue from parking meters. Moving forward, they will debate whether or not the city needs smart technology installed into their garages. Letterheads can be used in the documentation process.
Since the city is a famous tourist hotspot, it has an overcrowding problem in which many people are unable to find adequate parking. However, past attempts to reduce traffic congestion or enforce paid public parking were met with considerable resistance. At present, businesses and apartment residents from around Clifton Park are limited to 2,300 parking spots and only three parking garages that fill up quickly on weekends.
The city tried to reduce the amount of time people are allowed to park, offering to build a new City Center parking garage on Maple Avenue as a compromise. However, this solution had its costs, given that construction could take away 200 spaces from the High Rock Avenue lot. It will still provide free parking for short-term visitors unless they plan to stay in one spot for several hours.
Should the smart technology idea not get the thumbs up, residents must resort to biking on roads or taking the bus to reach their destination in the downtown area. The council’s response to the city’s parking proposals should return in January 2020.
