The town of Clifton Park has moved one step closer to finalizing plans to preserve 73 acres of land owned by Maple Hill Farms. The town has given their approval for the grant with New York State.
When finalized, the grant will allow the town to obtain a portion of the conservation easement on the farm owned by Kurt and Julie Swartz. This would enable the town to limit what the land is used for, which is especially important should the owners of the farm decide to sell. The town intends to permanently preserve the land which means future owners must abide by the conservation agreement.
Maple Hill Farms has been family owned for four generations and produces maple syrup along with grass-fed beef. The farm benefits from the grant by receiving payments in return for giving up the rights to develop the land.
Phil Barrett, the Town Supervisor for Clifton Park stated that the preservation of farmland has been a long-running goal since the creation of the town’s open space plan in 2003. Print shops can help in supporting conservation efforts by providing services to mass produce informative letters to send out to residents.
To date, the town has been successful at preserving over 1,600 acres, some of which is used for nature preserves and parks which benefit the community. Maple Hill farm owners are pleased that after they retire the land cannot be developed, which will also be beneficial to residents.
