Families in Clifton Park can drop off their children or enjoy a family day out at Butterflies and Blooms, an event that teaches kids about different species of brightly colored butterflies in the butterfly garden.
The butterfly garden at the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci) is inviting children to experience the cycle of life by watching butterflies mature throughout their life stages, from a growing caterpillar to a chrysalis chamber before it emerges into adulthood. They will get to discover hundreds of native butterflies including the monarchs, buckeyes, painted ladies, and swallowtails flying around them.
Children can learn about what butterflies like to eat such as fruits and how they help pollinate flowers. A museum guide will be explaining what each exhibit does as wells as how scientists are conducting studies on butterflies in certain fields of technology. The garden serves as a warm environment, imitating a butterfly’s natural habitat, which is filled with fragrant flowers and a large variety of plants the insects rely on for food.
The miSci butterfly garden is regularly maintained by volunteer gardeners in charge of preserving the exhibitions and keeping the temperature humid, so patrons are asked to dress in light layers.
Having opened to the public last month, the butterfly house will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm up until April 19. Sunday hours are from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
