Bellerose project offers butterflies a helping hand

Monarch butterflies are well known for their long distance flying, and a Bellerose activity will give these insects a helping hand.

The Outdoor Monarch House in Bellerose has a volunteer program running in August of 2025, and those who sign up will be helping this species to survive into the future. It will be a hands-on activity, and those who do sign up will also be offered spots in an optional fall activity.

Registrants for the initiative will be helping to look after the monarchs by caring for their eggs, feeding and checking on the caterpillars and making notes of what they see. They can observe the chrysalises, and they may even be able to take part in a butterfly release. They will also gather milkweed and collect eggs to raise, as well as remove any invasive plant species they find in their designated work areas.

To thank the volunteers for their hard work, they will be invited to return in September for a session where they will learn how to tag monarchs as well as collect and store milkweed seeds.
