What's Happening in Bellerose, NY…

Kids are often fascinated by the world around them, and a Bellerose area activity will introduce them to some new creepy-crawly friends.

Also known as sow bugs and roly-polies, pill bugs are more closely related to other crustaceans like lobsters and crabs than insects, and will be the stars of an installment of the Bug Buddies program set for early November. It will be on offer at Queens Country Farm Museum, and a registration fee of $12 is being charged.

During the activity, participants will learn about pill bugs and the role they play in the environment. They will discover how they predate the dinosaurs, and can be found in many ordinary locations, including their own backyard. Information will be shared about how they use gills to breathe in damp environments and are highly effective when it comes to recycling dead plant materials into healthy soil.

Kids may enjoy hands-on learning opportunities that allow them to make discoveries about the world around them. Facilitators can order Copies of handouts and other materials they need from local Stationery printers.

Bellerose families are invited to be part of this introduction to the humble pill bug, which is scheduled for Sunday, November 2. It will begin at 11:00 am and end at 12:15 pm, and a parent or guardian must remain on site with their kids at all times.
