What's Happening in Bellerose, NY…

Bellerose can get into the Caribbean spirit by attending the upcoming 5th annual Bankra Caribbean Folk Festival coming in a few days. The festival will celebrate traditional authentic Caribbean folk cultures and Forms.

There will be stalls and an island where artists, craftspeople, and merchandise vendors will be hawking Caribbean-themed merchandise, arts, and crafts. Caribbean cuisine will be everywhere. The organizers have encouraged the vendors to do a little banner printing in order to present festive imaginative booths.

Nonprofits and corporate entities will be manning booths and passing out Business Cards, Promotional Products, and information about their goods and services.

Another part of the festival will be the cultural performances. Storytelling, dancing, and drumming will all be part of the festivities, as well as singing and instrumentals. Jamaican born Andrew Clarke will be singing and bringing his thespian acumen to the stage. The colorful Braata Folk Singers will perform Caribbean and Jamaican folk music, choral, dance, and theatrical arrangements. Headlining the event will be Kingston, Jamaica’s own Ernie Smith, singing his original songs and accompanying himself on his acoustic guitar.

Local clubs and organizations will have displays of Caribbean culture and traditions. A Play Zone will offer face painting, dancing, stilt walkers, characters ,and bounce houses.

The 2019 Bankra Caribbean Folk Festival will be held on Friday, June 8 at Saint Albans Park 169 Street, Merrick Blvd, Queens. The event opens at 1:00 pm and the concert will begin at 4:00 pm.
