Bellerose area outing to explore Puerto Rican foliage

A botanical garden serves as both a reservoir of biodiversity and an educational opportunity for the public, and one located near Bellerose has an event on deck that will explore the herbs and other plants of Puerto Rico.

Guide Maggie Rivera will share her knowledge of the culinary and medical plants that call the island of Puerto Rico home. She will discuss their history and use over the years in an activity on offer at Queens Botanical Garden.

During the excursion, Maggie will discuss the various species encountered, and the group will discover how they are part of the culture of the Caribbean. There will be a brief introduction to their folklore, and the registrants will meet up on the terrace of the venue’s Visitor and Administration Building. A discounted registration fee is available for those who hold a current Garden membership. Parking is available and the location is accessible by public transit.

Tickets for this outing are $11.49 for non-members, while members will be asked to pay $5.19 each. A brochure printing company can prepare printed guides to distribute during a nature-based activity so that the attendees can keep on learning.

This introduction to the native plants of Puerto Rico and how they have become interwoven through its cuisine, traditional medicine, and culture will take to the Garden’s trails next Saturday, November 23. It will begin at 2:00 pm.
