Albuquerque schools suggest changes to calendar

The Albuquerque Public School District has proposed a new calendar for the 2023-2024 school year that includes opening schools a week earlier.

The district made the announcement following the passage of HB 130 by state lawmakers which would require that schools all over New Mexico provide more teaching time. It is expected that Governor Michelle Lujan-Grisham will the sign the bill and make it law. Official documents like these are likely to feature letterheads on them.

Superintendent Scott Elder said in a statement that the changes are an attempt to improve student outcomes, and that the district is prepared to move away from the status quo if it helps towards this aim.

APS has proposed several other changes to the 2023-2024 school year calendar, which include attempt four more school days to the year to make a total of 182, starting the first semester on August 3, and having May 31 as the last day. Under the proposal, fall breaks will become shorter, while spring and winter breaks will be longer. All schools would also adopt a grading schedule that is updated every quarter.

Students in middle and elementary and middle school, excluding those in schools that are classified as Transformational Opportunity Pilot schools, would be released early on some Wednesdays so that the teachers can have two hours to meet up and collaborate.
