Unique Christmas tale screens in Albuquerque

Albuquerque’s Main Library downtown will host a unique spin on a classic story when The Muppet Christmas Carol screens this December.

Based on the novella by Charles Dickens, Michael Caine features as the miserable, miserly Ebenezer Scrooge. Kermit the Frog plays his loyal and hardworking employee, Bob Cratchit, voiced by Steve Whitmire.

True to the original tale, Scrooge receives an unforgettable lesson after the events of his life play out before him when the three Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit him.

Brian Henson, the son of the late Muppets creator Jim Henson, helmed the film in what is his directorial debut.

The movie is full of Muppet characters taking on many of the side roles surrounding Scrooge, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, Beaker, Sam Eale, Animal, Rizzo the Rat and more. However, Caine said he took the role seriously, as if he were acting with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

The Muppet Christmas Carol had a theatrical release in 1992, in which the song “When Love Is Gone,” was cut out, due to a producer’s objection over the tune being too sad for children. However, the song was later restored in subsequent physical releases on VHS and DVD.

Screenings like this may choose to use brochure printing to create a list of events or activities for audiences.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is screening on December 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Main Library at 501 Copper Ave NW in downtown Albuquerque.
