The South Broadway Library in Albuquerque is ringing in the holiday season with a screening of an award-nominated comedy-drama, Pieces of April, next month.
The 2003 film stars Katie Holmes as a waitress who invites her estranged family, including her dying mother, played by Patricia Clarkson, to Thanksgiving dinner.
Clarkson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the film, which was written and directed by Peter Hedges. The film also stars Oliver Platt, Derek Luke, Alison Pill, John Gallagher Jr., and Alice Drummond.
The PG-13 rated movie focuses on Holmes’ April Burns, and her boyfriend Bobby played by Luke, as they struggle to prepare hosting the family for Thanksgiving. Things go awry quickly as April realizes her oven is broken and Bobby struggles to find a suit to borrow.
Meanwhile, the audience sees a glimpse of the dysfunction in store as April’s mother and father prepare to travel from Pennsylvania to New York. The long road trip, led by the father, Platt’s Jim, and mother, Clarkson’s Joy, reveals how April has been considered a black sheep of the family as her brother, sister, and grandmother also tag along for the trip.
