Albuquerque approves program to care for students

Albuquerque City Councilors tackled a wide range of city issues, including initiatives to curb speeding and promote kindness, during a May meeting that lasted for almost six hours.

The Albuquerque Public Schools, Fire Department, Police Department, and Community Safety Department have been given the go-ahead to join forces to address the impact of trauma on children. The initiative, which involves notifying schools and providing care to students who have witnessed or experienced traumatic events, was initially launched by Maggie Hart Stebbins, the former Bernalillo County Commissioner, 2017, but delayed due to Covid-19. Initiatives like this one can be proposed using brochure printing.

In essence, first responders will report to schools when they encounter traumatic incidents involving students as the victims or witnesses. This will enable schools to appropriately support the affected students upon returning to school.

The resolution received eloquent support from Ms. Jaramillo, a student in fourth grade at a nearby elementary school who stated:

“As a student, I know how hard it is to go to school if something stressful happens at home. When you are having a bad day it is nice to have the adults at school know that they can check on you and make sure you are doing okay.”

During that same meeting, the council voted against a proposal that aimed to create a list of all the landlords in the city, as well as the properties they let.
