Residents in Somerville are getting ready for the 76th Annual Tour of their town.
The cycling competition combines fun, sunshine, friendly competition, and also honors the nation and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for it.
The cycling series itself will feature over 600 cyclists from around the world. Both professionals and amateurs are expected to turn out for the event, including some of the top riders in the country. The competitors will reach top speeds of over 40 miles per hour on the 50-mile course, racing along the main streets and quaint Victorian-style homes of Somerville. Prizes will be awarded to the best in each category, ranging from $500 to $10,000.
Along the streets of the race, small booths and vendors will also be set up to provide shopping, entertainment, and fun to visitors of the race. The festival-style attractions are entirely staffed by volunteers, and all proceeds go to supporting Jack’s Kids, a nonprofit providing assistance to families who have children battling cancer. The day will also feature a Memorial Day tribute honoring service men and women who have fallen in combat.
The Tour of Somerville will be held on May 30 starting at 10:45 am. The starting Banners can be found at North Bridge and Main St. and a full route for the race can be located online. Attendance at the event is free. Anyone interested in visiting should check the website for more information.
