Festive Somerville event to showcase community talent

An event is bringing a display of talent from in and around Somerville together to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

The Somerville St. Patrick’s Day Parade is an event put together by the Somerville Parade Committee. The experience takes place each year as a tribute to the Irish holiday. The event originated in 1984, with the committee forming in 1991. The parade prides itself on being both family friendly and free.

Participants in past editions have included the Grand Marshal and their family, marching bands, color guards, cheerleaders, city and county officials, dance troupes, local scout groups, first responders, and local businesses. The event gives community members a chance to showcase themselves and what they do.

Participating, like attending, is also free. Donations are accepted on the parade website. These help to fund future editions of the event, alongside sponsorships. The route both starts and ends on Somerville’s Main Street, with several staging areas along the path. Many parade participants will use banner printing to make something to hold in front of them as they walk, serving as a promotion technique for their group or business.

The event has a scheduled starting time of 1:30pm on Sunday, March 15th, although a Grand Marshal Celebration is taking place on Friday, March 13, with a $40 donation fee required for attendance. This will be at the Somerville Knights of Columbus location.
