Girls on the Run of Central New Jersey will hold a 5K in Somerville to raise money for its scholarship program.
Girls on the Run 5K Somerville is an event where people can help provide local girls with educational opportunities by competing in a community 5K. The money from the race will go to the Girls on the Run Scholarship Program, which offers assistance to girls in low-income areas. People can register for the event on the lawn of the Somerset County Courthouse. T-Shirts will be given to the runners who pre-register for the race, and refreshments will be provided to participants.
The organization uses its programs to help young women become more confident and develop their decision-making skills. The non-profit was founded in 1996 and originally only had 13 members. Donna York is the current executive director of the group, and Lynn Sherman is the organization’s project coordinator. The foundation also offers programs like Heart & Sole for middle schoolers and Junior Coach for high schoolers.
The community 5K will be held on Sunday, June 11 from 8:15 am to noon. The cost to join the race is $45, though discounts will be given to those who register before June 7. People can also support Girls on the Run by donating online. Non-profits that hold these activities may use poster printing to draw more attention to their races.
