Elementary school in Somerville holds annual recreational day

The annual Field Day was recently held at Van Derveer Elementary School in Somerville at which hundreds of students participated. There were activities indoors in the gymnasium as well as outdoors.

Students rotated through many kinds of games and activities, including a javelin and ball throw, Flag Tag, Fill the Bucket, and Gaga Ball. Firefighters from Lincoln House cooled off the kids with bursts of water every so often from their aerial hose.

Organizers of the event were physical education teachers Sergio Garcia, Ryan Zamorsky, and Allen Warner along with members of the community, parents, and staff members from the school. Schools such as this often carry out poster printing to promote such special events that demonstrate the cooperation of the entire school community to make them possible.

The Parent-Teacher Organization of Sommerville provided volunteers, the large blow-up obstacle course, and ice pops. As the students ran from one station to another with an occasional spray from the fire truck, parents and staff members monitored their progress. Luc Sergile, member of the Board of Education, volunteered as a DJ throughout the day.

Sergile said that this is one of the best days of the year for the students as they have the opportunity to test their skills, run around, and get ready for summer just a few weeks away.
