Out of 149 metros in the United States ranked for livability, Wilmington came in at No. 17, while Ashville, the other North Carolina metro, took the No. 8 spot. Among the criteria used to rank these metros were access to healthcare, cost of living, percentage of higher educated residents, unemployment rate and the availability of social clubs and civic organizations. In all 17 metrics were evaluated for each metro.
Wilmington ranked 38th in socioeconomics, 40th in quality of life and 18th for location & community in recognition of its popularity as a travel destination as well as its beaches, shopping and food.

The report assigned the No. 1 spot to Washington D.C. which was noted for its focus on wellness, unmatched professional networking opportunities and revitalization efforts.
The rest of the top five cities were No. 2 Portland, Maine, followed by Kansas City, Missouri; Des Moines, Iowa; and Ann Arbor, Michigan in that order.
