Wilmington pizzeria crowned among North Carolinas best

Chowhound, a popular online food community, has named Wilmington’s Pizzeria Don Luca the best in a special kind of pizza.

The site named Pizzeria Don Luca in the city’s Brooklyn Arts District as the best “hole-in-the-wall” pizza place in North Carolina. Located in a century-old building, the pizzeria was taken over in 2022 by Alex White, who was excited for the anticipated changes coming to the neighborhood. As it turns out, the area recently received approval for social district status.

Don Luca’s, located at 1215 N. Fourth Street, is a counter-service eatery lauded by Chowhound for its fresh ingredients and hand-tossed dough. The cheese for the pizzas is grated and the meat cut by hand, while sauces are made in house. In addition to its pizzas, Don Luca’s baked chicken wings are a particular favorite. Available beverages include beer and wine.

The menu contains classic pizzas such as Hawaiian, Margherita, and a veggie supreme the pizzeria calls Grocery Cart Rodeo, as well as a number of specialty pies. The restaurant’s take on Buffalo Chicken pizza is called the T-Bird while its PBR (which stands for Pickle, Bacon Ranch) contains garlic sauce, mozzarella, bacon, dill pickles, red onion, and a drizzle of ranch. Onsite picnic tables are available for guests to enjoy their food.
