As part of Wilmington’s celebration of America’s 250th birthday, the official opening of a temporary park has taken place in its downtown area.
The pop-up park was set up at the corner of Chestnut and Third streets and was constructed to be a place for people to gather with the objective of engendering a sense of community, building connectivity among residents and instilling civic pride.
Local governments find that banner printing services can be useful in catching the eye of the public and keeping them informed.
The idea of a temporary park was first floated by city leaders in March after a planned-for grocery store on the site was no longer feasible. One of Wilmington’s deputy managers, Mary Vigue, explained that there was a two-pronged goal of revitalizing the area while encouraging residents to gather in the vicinity. She said:
“You know, we kind of let it run down, and what can we do to motivate and inspire the community to go out and be part of the 250th celebration and so combining a multitude of things, improving that area, but also how do we as a city celebrate that, and some of that is bringing together the community in an open space design.”
City officials plan to keep the park open at least throughout the summer, with the possibility of extending its life into this fall as the city looks to find temporary purposes for other spaces not being used.
