Beach biking event to return in March

It has been gone for two years but now it is coming back – the US Open Fat Bike Beach Championship will soon be held in Wrightsville Beach, only a few miles from Wilmington.

Due to COVID-19, the Fat Bike Beach Championships were shelved for 2020 and 2021, but they will return in March. The biggest of its kind on the East Coast, the festive competition will take place on the sand at Blockade Runner Beach Resort.

According to David Ellegood, president and director of the Cape Fear chapter of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association:

"The US Open Fat Bike Beach Championship is about having fun and competing on a unique course. The race is held one hundred percent in the sand, and each year the course and beach obstacles change, creating unpredictable levels of difficulty."

For many upcoming events, a banner printing service offers the best promotional option.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, the fat bike is similar to the mountain bike, only with large tires to accommodate the sand. Lasting two hours, the elite race tests the riders’ endurance as they spend half the race on soft sand, with the rest on the easier to ride and faster packed sand. This event is geared toward professional and semi-professional riders, while recreational or novel riders are urged to try the hour-long race.

Following the March 18 to 20 event, the beach and its sand will be returned to their original condition.
