The city of Gastonia has been awarded $103,000 from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether to connect downtown to Crowders Mountain, a popular destination for hiking. Crowders Mountain is between Gastonia and Kings Mountain.
Recently, Crowders Mountain was awarded $2m from North Carolina State Parks to improve its hiking trails. The funds will be used to improve and repair trails that are among the most heavily used by the many visitors to the park each year. Local Print shops can help with creating maps and other materials with more information about such trails and where work is being done.
The city is working with the Carolina Thread Trail on the study. Carolina Thread Trail spokesperson, Jane Love, said the study meets NCDOT plans for trails throughout the state, among which are targets to connect populated places with state parks. Love added that the project itself could attract more people to a part of the city of Gastonia that is currently not frequently visited.
It is expected that it will take one year to complete the feasibility study and then two years before work can begin on small segments. It will be another 5 to 10 years before the path from the city to the mountain will be completed.
