Special area of downtown Gastonia open for unique experience
A new Social District is now open in Gastonia.
The district runs along Main Street from Broad Street on the east side to CaroMont Heath Park on the west side. The goal of the district is to increase the walkability of the downtown area and bring more awareness of the businesses in the district.
The way the district operates is that businesses with an Alcoholic Beverage Control System permit from the State of North Carolina will use a designated cup with the logo design of the Social District clearly displayed in order to sell alcoholic beverages. People within the district will be able to purchase such beverages and carry them within the district, or enjoy them in other establishments participating in the district. All state and federal drinking laws need to be followed and patrons need to be at least 21 years old.
Michael Peoples, city manager, expressed his excitement about the first recognized Social District in the city. He is hopeful it will help to attract more visitors and tourists to the downtown area while also increasing the exposure of the downtown businesses. He added his thanks to the participating businesses and he hopes that this will become a destination for their customers.
The district is open seven days a week from 11:00 am to midnight Monday through Saturday, and on Sunday from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm.
