The Gastonia City Council has approved a new contract to move the city from fixed bus routes to micro-transit.
River North Transit has been awarded a contract for 36 months to provide this new service for the city. The cost for the first year is expected to be $1.65 million.
Mayor Richard Franks said that as the city continues to grow, a greater need for on-demand micro-transit transportation is emerging. He added that this service will increase accessibility for everyone and will also save money for the city.
The micro-transit services will address issues like long wait times, areas with limited services, a lack of access to bus stops, and an ageing fleet of buses. This new service will provide passengers with curb-to-curb access when they need it, similar to private rideshare services like Lyft and Uber. Those who need a ride can book one online and pay for it at the time of booking. They will be picked up at their own location and then travel directly to their destination.
Director of the Department of Transportation, Randi Gates, said that the current six bus routes in the city often have empty buses, so this service will provide access to more people. Local Print shops can help spread the word about such new services and their benefits with Flyers and other printed materials.
This new service will launch on Monday, July 1.
